Get 48 GB Free Dropbox storage for free!

May 29th, 20122 Comments

These days Manufacturers are tying with Dropbox and giving away extra cloud storage space. First HTC announced 25GB dropbox space with their HTC One series and then Samsung on the launch of their flagship device; Samsung Galaxy SIII announced that every buyer of SGSIII will get 50GB of free cloud storage with Dropbox.

But the best part is, now you can also get this  48GB space without owning SGSIII. You just need a rooted android device. That’s it.

Somebody from famous XDA-Developers forum extracted the Dropbox app from leaked SGSIII firmware and flashed it through CWM. And Voilla you get 48GB of free space… :P

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Clear the data and uninstall the Dropbox app from your android device.

2. Download this ZIP.

3. Flash it through Clockwork Mod Recovery or push the two apks “Dropbox.apk” and “DropboxOOBE.apk” extracted from the zip to /system/app/ and reboot.

4. Enter your credentials in the Dropbox app and wait for 5minutes, you will get an email telling you just upgraded to 48GB on Dropbox. :P

That thread got pulled pretty quickly. I was able to download it and get the extra space on my Galaxy Nexus. I’m not sure why they pulled it. I scanned the ,zip both on and off the phone, and there’s no malware. I didn’t see anything in the .apk that looks like it does anything it’s not supposed to do.

I guess Dropbox could be jerks and try to say that anyone who can’t prove they have a GSIII loses their account. They’ve always made people jump through too many hoops for really meager amounts of storage, so I’m hoping this is the first move to rty to fix that.
