Early Nokia 808 buyers reporting ‘purple tint’ issue with screen, India stocks unaffected

Jun 17th, 20126 Comments

The Nokia PureView buyers are complaining, it’s not the high price of the phone, but it’s the purple tint that the screen is displaying. Some of the initial buyers of the 808 PureView across the world have reported on Nokia Support forum about a purple tint that is present across the screen.

This tint is especially visible when viewing blacks.

While some of the Nokia Care Centers (Malaysian Care Center) have reportedly washed their hands off from what needs to be done, Nokia has at its end, taken note and assured the people on the forum that they are taking steps to fix the problem, both in terms of the purple tint and the service offered by the Nokia Care Center.

The issue of a purple tint, is not a new one in mobile phones. Recent victims of this are the Nokia N8 and the Samsung Galaxy S2 (yellow tint). You can check out more about this purple tint issue by heading out to the Nokia Support Discussions thread.

Update: Over the weekend I carried the story of early stocks of 808 PureView having a purple tint in screen. Malaysia seems to have been worst hit with the purple tint issue. India it seems, isn’t affected by the purple tint issue and barring that one complaint in the forum, I’ve yet to come across any such ‘tinting’ issues in India at least. To see if this is really the case in India, I got in touch with a few dealers and with a few people in Nokia India and they have stated that there’s no issue like that that they’ve come across.

Going by that, I think it’s safe to assume that it is just a ‘batch’ issue and not a product wide problem.

I’m waiting to get my review unit from Nokia India and will definitely update you on the ‘purple tint’ if I come across it.

I have seen 3 N8′s in India, including mine… And the purple tint problem was NOT in them at all…

I also had the purple tint issue with my Nokia 808. Posted it on the Nokia Conversations website under the screen name “sabbyj” (you can check). Got a call from Nokia India, they asked me to take my phone to the nearest Nokia Care so they could have a look at it. I took it there, and they acknowledged the issue and replace it with a new one right away (Nokia India representative had sent that piece for me after I described her my issue on the call). Now I have an 808 without the purple tint issue . If any of you have it, I recommend that you take it to your nearest Nokia Care Center. Though I wouldn’t advice you to expect a replacement right away like I did. Because my replacement set was already there at the Nokia Care Center. Yours might take some time. But it will come. Cheers.

could you please tell me how can i check the phone for the purple tint?

i am planning to buy 808 but that problem really makes me thinks otherwise.

      thanks.

There’s no ‘tool’ or way to check except with your naked eyes. India hasn’t seen reports of units with any tint. A couple of cases is the max. I’ve seen or heard.

Just transfer this image to the 808, put the brightness down to the minimum, and then put your finger on the ambient light sensor (located near front camera). Open the image and if you see any (and I mean ANY) hint of the color PURPLE, then that set has a problem, ask for another set.
