The US Galaxy Nexus is running 'Takju' instead of 'Yakju', real cause for excitement!

So if you didn’t understand any of that then don’t worry there’s nothing you should be afraid of. They’re not names of exotic fruits or flavours within Android.

‘Yakju’ refers to the name of the software profile Google has assigned for the firmware that it pushes to the Galaxy Nexus devices. Now you might think that every Nexus device gets its update from Google so then what does this name mean. Well, some of the Galaxy Nexus devices run on a variant of this called the ‘Yakjuxw’ or ‘Yakjujp’ or something else similar… These builds are actually distributed directly by Samsung and not Google.

Now it seems that the Android world was abuzz with news of another completely different software profile for the Galaxy Nexus called the ‘Takju’. Needles to say this is completely different sounding than any of the names mentioned above. Goes without saying that everyone got curious. Well last night Android Police broke the news that ‘Takju’ was another profile for the US Galaxy Nexus [GSM] variant.

The difference between the two is that apparently this one has Google Wallet support built into the ROM unlike for other global builds. The US version of the Galaxy Nexus is available for purchase from the Google Play Store.

Over At XDA Forum, some people have tried flashing the firmware to see if it works or not on the ‘Yakju’, they’ve reported that it’s been successful with no hiccups and problems being faced afterwards.

You can check out the XDA forum members claims by heading to the forum. If you want too flash from Android 4.0.2 (Yakjuxw) to this variant, here’s the link on ‘how to‘. [Remember try this only if you have an idea of what you are doing, World of Phones is not responsible for what happens to your device]

Here’s a direct link to the all the Android images for the Nexus devices.

But what makes it so exciting? The reason for excitement is quite clear, Google is testing the next version of Android [Jelly Bean] on these devices, which means in all likelihood the US GSM variants may get the JB update first followed by rest of the world.

To clarify; if I flash takju onto my Galaxy Nexus I will still be receiving OTA updates from Google, right?  I ordered a Galaxy Nexus GSM off ebay, but I think I may be getting an international model so I will need to do this.

You will get all the updates that Google releases for the ‘Takju’ build after switching over to it.
